Full vs. Partial Dentures, which can be a better option?

A fallen adult tooth can be extremely problematic because the person facing this situation can face many subsequential issues. The facial muscles sag with damage to facial structure, and there can be chewing issues. Permanent and removable partial denture treatments bring a potential solution to these issues. While these are beneficial, selecting between them cannot be very clear. For the best decision, you must consider your specific case and the feasibility of a full denture and removable partial denture. A comparison between both of these can help you select the better dentures.

What are Full Dentures?

 Implant Dentures

A full denture is made with replacement teeth attached to the gum structure. For applying a full denture, all the teeth of a respective jaw must be removed. If you are getting a full denture for the upper jaw, then there must be no natural teeth in the upper jaw. The same goes true for the lower jaw and both jaws at the same time as well.

As full dentures are applied after removing all teeth, the gum may get some time to heal, depending on the type of denture you are getting. However, a patient may get different options in full dentures, including the conventional ones that need at least 8-12 weeks for the gums to heal.

There are full intermediate dentures that a patient may apply immediately after the removal of their tooth. Getting an immediate full denture means that the patient will not have to wait for the healing time without having any teeth in their mouth.

Pros of Full Dentures

  • You cover the whole jaw
  • These are easier to remove
  • These can be lasting
  • You get a natural look

Cons of Full Dentures

  • Without implants, your full denture may fall out unexpectedly
  • You need to limit consuming some food items

What are Partial Dentures?

 Flexible Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are also known as bridge or removable partial dentures. Here the patient gets replacement teeth attached to a plastic base and a metal framework. The whole tooth and gum structure is mimicked. That structure fits in the place of the missing tooth. Partial dentures are applicable when the natural teeth remain inside the jaw.

Pros of Partial Dentures

  • You do not need to remove all of your natural teeth
  • Partial dentures are less costly because they do not need all teeth to be replaced
  • A partial denture can easily fulfill the gap in your mouth because of a missing tooth.
  • A removable partial denture can protect your remaining natural teeth by evenly distributing the usage and wear & tear among different teeth.

Cons of Partial Dentures

  • Getting used to them can take a while.

Which can be a better option for you?

Everyone goes through a different oral health condition. For some people, removing all of their teeth is easier than getting a full denture. Similarly, some people find it better to get a removable partial denture. However, it does not mean that if someone with a similar tooth condition is getting one type of denture, you can also get one.

For the best experience and oral health, it is best to go for a removable partial denture if you are not losing many natural teeth. However, considering a full denture will be better if you only have a few natural teeth left in your jaw.

Final Remarks

When going through oral health issues, you must consider getting professional dental services. Another thing to consider is the effectiveness of different dental procedures for you. For some patients, a full denture is better, while a removable partial denture can be better for some. Select one according to your oral health situation and the recommendation from your dentist. It is because you can have the best experience only by selecting the right one of these treatments.
