Types of Oral Sedation used by dentists during treatment.

Dr Sayeedi

Sedation is essential for patients who have anxiety issues about dental procedures. It also helps lessen the pain during treatment, keeping the patients relaxed and calm. There are different types of sedation, including injections. Oral sedation is the best choice for dentists when patients do not want to go for those options.

When do dentists use sedation during treatment?

Some patients are afraid of needles, while others need sedation for a long time, which makes IV sedation and Nitrous Oxide unsuitable. It is when dentists go for oral sedatives that are usually given in the form of a pill or syrup in some cases. These are most useful in the following circumstances:

  • Extreme tooth sensitivity
  • Claustrophobia
  • Sensitive gag reflex.
  • Difficulty while controlling movements

So, when a patient gets oral sedatives, the procedure becomes calmer and more relaxed. This sedation depends on your requirements so dentists may use different oral sedatives and dosage levels depending on the patient.

What are the different types of oral sedation?

Dentists use different types of oral sedation, and here are the details you must know about each of them.

 1. Triazolam

It belongs to benzodiazepines. It is a valuable medication for treating insomnia as it helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep. Its results can last a few hours, and when used for oral sedation, it can decrease anxiety while inducing amnesia and sedation before procedures. Your dentist may prefer it because of the low to moderate risk of dependence on others.

 2. Zaleplon

It belongs to central nervous system depressants, which slow down the nervous system to help you stay calm and sleepy. It works on your GABA receptors in the brain to bring the drowsy sensation. Zaleplon has quick action and releases time with a low frequency of side effects, including dependency after a single dosage.

It makes you have low to moderate sedation effects, so you may not feel pain, but you may still communicate and cooperate with the dentist during your procedure.

 3. Lorazepam

Lorazepam is usually helpful for tooth extraction, especially when extracting molars. It is useful for procedures where the dentist wants to keep you in a pain-free state for a long time after the process has ended. Its sedative effects can last 10-12 hours, depending on the dosage. It effectively treats patients with high dental anxiety levels with moderate sedation.

 4. Midazolam Oral Syrup

It also belongs to benzodiazepines and is a safer drug to induce conscious sedation during dental treatment. It is usually given to patients with difficulty taking pills, especially kids. Midazolam oral syrup acts faster than pills, taking only 10-20 minutes before the procedure. It may last for up to 2 hours, depending on the dosage.

What are some other types of sedation that dentists use during treatment?

Dentists prefer using the most effective types of sedation according to the patient and their treatment. These types include:

  • Nitrous oxide sedation
  • Intravenous Sedation
  • General Anesthesia

Some effects last only during the procedure, while others may have an impact for a few hours.

Conclusion

Oral sedation pills are usually asked to take an hour before the procedure, and their results last for some hours after the dental procedure ends. So, it makes the procedure painless, and the patient stays pain-free for a long time after the procedure finishes. That's why dentists only use it after consulting you. It is given with a written prescription, and the patients are asked to have a responsible companion who will drive them to the dentist and back to their place after the process.
